Riga Airport (RIX) Guide for Passengers from Minsk & Belarus

Why Riga Rather than Vilnius?

Vilnius is closer (175 km vs 470 km), but Riga wins on route network: airBaltic flies from Riga to more than 80 destinations. Riga is better for flights to Scandinavia, Iceland, Canada and certain Asian routes not available from VNO.

Airport Layout

RIX is a compact single-terminal airport with three piers (A, B, C). Pier A — non-commercial and regional flights. Pier B — Schengen flights. Pier C — non-Schengen flights. Wayfinding is straightforward: signs are in Latvian, English and Russian.

Arrivals and Meet-and-Greet

The meet-and-greet zone is on the ground floor; the arrivals exit leads directly into the main hall. ComfortLine drivers meet passengers with a name board at the customs exit. Landmark: the Coffee & Chocolate café near the main exit.

Pre-Flight Tips

• ▸airBaltic requires online check-in — without it there is an approximately €30 desk fee.
• ▸Carry-on: airBaltic allows only a small bag for free; a cabin bag incurs an extra charge.
• ▸Free airport Wi-Fi connects via SMS verification (requires a Latvian or roaming number).
• ▸Duty Free shops open after passport control — alcohol prices are noticeably lower than in Riga city.
• ▸City bus No. 22 to Riga centre runs every 10–15 minutes; journey time 30 minutes.

Minsk–Riga Transfer: Key Facts

The Minsk–Riga route passes through the Belarus–Latvia border (checkpoints Grigorovshchina / Patarnieki). This is a less congested crossing than the Lithuanian ones — average waiting time on weekdays is 1.5–3 hours. Total journey time is 7–9 hours. We recommend departing 3–4 hours before your flight.
